Types of Pond Pumps To Choose From

The Pond Pumps you choose is the most vital piece of equipment that you have in your pond. This is true regardless of the size of the pond because it is what keeps the water circulating. When you start looking for the best pond pump to buy you will likely experience some confusion with the different varieties and the capabilities that each one has. It is important to have some understanding of what the various types are and of the situations and locations in which they are most beneficial.

Submersible Pond Pumps

The word “submersible” means under water, so this type of pump will only work when it is under the water. Installation of this pump is relatively easy and it is very inexpensive to buy. However, it is costly to operate. Therefore, in order to avoid making a mistake in buying this pump and finding out that it doesn’t meet your needs you do need to have specific information about what it can do.

A submersible pump is designed for use mainly in small to medium sized ponds. The recommended water volume should not be more than 800 gallons. You can connect the pump to submersible filters if that is what you prefer. The motor of the pump is enclosed in a casing to protect it from the water, but it is still susceptible to water damage. When this happens you will have to replace the pump because repairs are not recommended due to safety concerns. This does not mean that it is not the right choice. As long as you maintain the pump on a regular basis it can last you for a long time.

External Pond Pumps

For a large pond, the best choice is that of an external pond pump. You install it outside of the water and it is less costly to operate than the submersible type. You don’t have to do a lot of maintenance to keep this type of pump in good working order. If you don’t want it to be easily seen, that is not a problem because there are many ways of concealing it on the side of the pond.

Even though an external pump is more expensive, it is well able to take care of a large volume of water. In a large pond, the water should be circulated at the rate of one full rotation per hour. This is the rate you need if you want to prevent mosquitoes from taking up residence in your water.

Solar Pump

You can very easily circulate the water in a small pond by using a solar pump. It is a version of the external pump, but it is harder to conceal. That is because you must install it in the location where it will receive the most sun. You will need to use mounting brackets for installation and depending on the spot you choose for the installation you may also need to have some sort of stakes or a wooden structure for it to rest on.

Knowing what is involved in the different types of pond pumps will make you a more informed customer when you are ready to buy.
